Saunders BostonSaunders Boston Limited is one of the leading firms of Chartered Architects based in Cambridge with a wealth of experience in:

  • Laboratory Projects
  • Design of environmentally responsive buildings
  • Exciting and contemporary design solutions
  • Innovative construction and procurement

The firm has been established for over 70 years and has built a reputation for delivering quality, complex and highly serviced buildings to fast programmes within stated budgets. Saunders Boston’s in-depth CAD skills have practical application in the careful co-ordination and integration of building fabric, structure and services as well as more artistic uses in producing visualisation and animations. The company is also known for the ability to produce sensitive and aesthetically pleasing buildings in settings that attract particular attention from planning authorities.

The Cambridge area has been in the forefront of the burgeoning British Biotech industry over the last 20 years and Saunders Boston have taken advantage of their position in the city to develop the skills and knowledge required to provide this sector with a first class service. This particular market is characterised by a need for flexible and highly serviced accommodation, often required quickly because of commercial pressures.

Recent ‘science’ based clients include:

  • Medical Research Council
  • Dow Chemicals
  • Monsanto
  • Celltech Chiroscience
  • BioFocus
  • Oxford Biomedica
  • University of Cambridge: Botanic Gardens, School of Veterinary Medicine
  • Millennium Pharmaceuticals
  • Ionix Pharmaceuticals
  • Amedis Pharmaceuticals

Recent notable projects include:-

Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Granta Park.
Saunders Boston was appointed to design a new 30,000 sq foot ‘temporary’ laboratory facility at Granta Park. The construction of the building started within 4 months of Saunders Boston first being approached by Millennium and was completed and occupied in a total of 9 months from inception to completion. The project houses over 90 scientists in both general and specialist laboratories and has a very high services content requiring a rooftop plant deck.

Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge
Saunders Boston has been working with the world renowned ‘Vets School’ for a number of years. The recently completed Equine Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Unit is the second project, following the successful delivery of a Equine Clinical Facility. A third project for a Small Animal Operating Facility has just commenced construction and outline designs are currently being prepared for a fourth, larger and more complex facility.

Medical Research Council
The Human Nutrition Research Centre (HNR) at Peterhouse Technology Park, Cambridge, is a special research unit within the Medical Research Council with close links to Addenbrookes Hospital and the University of Cambridge. The unit was once part of the world famous Dunn Nutrition Laboratory but is now a stand alone unit with the ability to work on projects beyond the traditional government funded research programmes. Saunders Boston developed the concept design for the building and then concentrated on the design of the 'fitout' to ensure that the HNR’s exacting requirements for the large number of small specialist analytical laboratories, write-up areas and office space were met in full. Saunders Boston has been actively engaged in the design of laboratories over the last twenty years, carrying out both small and large projects. They have the knowledge and ability to work with end users to solve their ‘brief’ and have used this experience to produce comprehensive but flexible designs for the proposed buildings in the Cambourne Research Quarter, ensuring that the specific needs of any prospective tenant can be accommodated.
