PROPERTIES STRICTLY FOR THE BIRDS

1 Mar 2002

As part of the recent National Nest Box Week, Cambourne Business Park has installed bird nest boxes to attract species such as house sparrow, kestrel, owl and possibly the spotted flycatcher.

By putting up nest boxes, the developers of the Business Park will be providing the wildlife with an invaluable and safe nesting site, a resource that is disappearing at an alarming rate in the countryside. As some of the boxes may have cameras fitted inside, it will hopefully also give employees at the Business Park hours of pleasure watching the birds undertake their nesting duties.

Bat boxes are also being erected to encourage the pipistrelle bat, one of our more commonly occurring bats and a species subject of the local Cambridgeshire biodiversity action plan. The bats may take a time to adopt the boxes either for hibernating, roosting or as a summer nursery but once they start to use them they are likely to return on an annual basis.

Daniel van Gelder, Associate Director of Development Securities Projects Limited commented: “We are committed to the principles of sustainable development and reducing the adverse environmental impact of our activities at the Park. In addition to the installation of these nesting boxes, Cambourne will be enhanced by a series of environmental projects including wetlands and marshes designed to attract and protect local wildlife.

“Additionally many ‘Green Transport' initiatives have already been included in the design of the Business Park including walk and cycle routes, and all the buildings provide covered parking for cycles and changing rooms and showers for use by pedestrians and cyclists.”
