New £5m road opens up for use
12 May 2003
THE new dual carriageway at Cambourne on the A428 trunk road opened to traffic on 11 May, the Highways Agency has announced.
The 1.2-mile dual carriageway has been built to the south of the existing road and includes a new all-movement interchange for access to Cambourne.
The £5 million project has been carried out by Mowlem Civil Engineering on behalf of a consortium of developers for the Cambourne development.
Minister for Transport, John Spellar, said: "This new road and interchange will provide better access to the new development and an improved section of trunk road for this heavily trafficked route. The A428 remained open while construction took place, and I congratulate the contractors on the successful completion of the contract with minimum disruption to traffic."
The new dual carriageway will link the existing single carriageway A428 west of the old Elsworth junction to the single carriageway A428 east of Monk Drive.
The new Elsworth Road opened to traffic at the same time.
Drivers coming from Elsworth will join the old A428 and travel east to the roundabout at Cambourne where they can join the new A428 dual carriageway to travel either east or west.
Access to Elsworth from the new dual carriageway will be via the new interchange on the A428 at Cambourne.
