LOCAL VIPS GET A TICKET TO RIDE
21 May 2003
A-top a double-decker Cambridge tour bus, they paused briefly for a photo on one of the new slip roads between Cambourne and the A428, and then went on a whistle-stop guided tour of Cambourne itself.
Spokesperson for the Cambourne consortium, John Slater, Managing Director of Bovis Homes, comments, “I think everyone was excited to be among the first to travel the new stretch of road on a milestone occasion in the development of Cambourne and the infrastructure of the county as a whole. It was a memorable day, and a great way to see the new trunk road in all its glory. Everyone I spoke to after the tour was also most impressed with how well the new bustling settlement of Cambourne is progressing and flourishing. I am sure the residents and Business Park employees will be as delighted as we are to use the new dual carriage way.”
Catherine Brookes, Highways Agency Project Manager, says of the new road and interchange, “It will provide better access to Cambourne and an improved section of trunk road for this busy route. The A428 remained open while construction took place, and I congratulate the contractors on the successful completion of the contract with minimum disruption to traffic.”
The 1.2 mile (2km) dual carriageway has been built to the south of the existing road. The £6m project - designed by RPS Transport - has been carried out by Mowlem Civil Engineering on behalf of the Cambourne consortium.
Ever-aware of the environment, the consortium developers - Bovis Homes, Bryant Homes and George Wimpey - has also made provision for the thriving badger population of Cambourne with regard to the dualled A428. Under the guidance of appointed ecological experts, ESL, a special badger tunnel is being put in place, running underneath the road.
The tunnel - a large concrete pipe - is approximately 600cm in diameter and will go underground and emerge again behind special badger fences to make sure the popular four-legged creatures can cross back and forth beneath the road safely. If by any chance a badger should stray onto the carriageway from another area, it can find its way back to safety behind the badger fences through a purpose-built one-way badger gate in the fencing. Once behind, it cannot get back through the gate onto the carriageway.
Cambourne aims to provide a whole new living environment of over 3,000 new homes with shops and services on the doorstep that will encompass the best of the past with all the benefits of modern planning.
