Healthy walks for workers at Cambourne Business Park
24 May 2005
The walks are part of Cambourne Business Park’s Green Travel Initiative and have been developed jointly with Cambourne’s Monkfield Medical Practice, the local library and South Cambridgeshire District Council. Local residents are also welcome on the walks, which will run on Thursdays at lunchtime, or can opt for the new Tuesday morning walks which will start from Sackville House, Cambourne.
The scheme was officially launched today by Cllr Bob Bryant, Chairman of South Cambridgeshire District Council at a lunch event at Cambourne Business Park. Cambourne GP Dr Peter Bailey explained at the launch why walking is such good exercise.
“Walking has been proven to be good for your health. It can help reduce stress, keep your heart strong, reduce your blood pressure and help you manage your weight. ‘Green exercise’, that’s exercise taken where there are views of landscape, trees, etc, is even better for your physical and mental health.”
Rebecca Burtt from the Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust was also at the event to talk about the wildlife in and around Cambourne and explain the variety of birds, animals and rare plants that can be seen when you take to the paths and woods on foot.
“Not only is walking in the fresh air good for you, a short burst of exercise at lunch time has been shown to help staff concentrate and makes them more productive in the afternoons,” explains Lesley Scobell, Green Travel Co-ordinator for Cambourne Business Park. “We are hoping that more local people will realise how enjoyable walking can be, how good the paths are locally and then try walking to work instead of jumping in the car.”
Countryside on your doorstep is just one of the benefits to workers at Cambourne Business Park. “The range of local amenities is growing all the time as the Cambourne settlement develops – we now have a Morrisons supermarket, four star hotel, health spa and sports facilities all five minutes walk from the Park,” adds Lesley Scobell.
The first lunchtime walk will start from Cambourne Business Park’s marketing office at 12.30pm on Thursday 26 May. Everyone is welcome. For more details call Lesley Scobell on 01223 472071.
