HONOURS FOR GREEN TRAVEL PLAN
3 Dec 2007
Cambourne Business Park has once again received top marks for its Green Travel policy. Twenty-eight organisations from across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have been rewarded for pioneering healthy and environmentally friendly commuting initiatives.
The third annual Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Workplace Travel Plan Awards were presented at the Science Park in Cambridge last week.
“The work being put in by these winners is helping to combat congestion and reduce greenhouse gas omissions,” said Cambridgeshire County Councillor Shona Johnstone, presenting the awards. “But travel plans also help many people fit walking and cycling into busy lives. This increase in physical activity for the daily commute is helping to combat obesity, the rise in coronary heart disease and increasing diabetes. As a non-executive director at Addenbrooke’s hospital I know how important this is.”
The awards are presented jointly by the Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership (TfW) and Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice Team. They reward completion of various steps in the travel planning process; from senior management commitment to develop a plan through to the Travel Plan Excellence Award, for businesses whose travel plans are now wedded into the way they do business.
Nicola Francis, senior travel plan coordinator with Peterborough City Council added: “The awards were given to employers from all sectors; commercial, retail, charity and public. The winners have implemented a really wide range of initiatives. Cambourne Business Park worked with event sponsor Stagecoach on a prize draw for bus tickets and at Peterborough Environment City Trust car journeys are being replaced by pushbikes with trailers.” Lesley Scobell, Travel Co-ordinator at Cambourne Business Park said “We are delighted to win this award and our very proud of the success our Travel Plan had achieved.
“There are also advantages to the community at large from these plans,” added Richard Bettle, Travel Plan Advisor at TfW. “Fewer cars on the road, cleaner air and a more effective local economy. That is surely worthy of reward!"
The Awards have been jointly supported by the East of England Development Agency, Stagecoach in Cambridgeshire, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council.
